Skilled Migrant Category: Bonus Points for Employment

Under the current Skilled Migrant Category system applicants may claim bonus points if their employment meets certain criteria. The bonus points may be granted for employment or a job offer in:

  • An identified future growth area;
  • An absolute skill shortage area;
  • A region outside Auckland.

Growth Area

As at December 2015, a future growth area is identified as either:

  • Biotechnology
  • Information Communications Technology
  • Creative industries (Advertising, Software & Computing Services, Publishing, TV and Radio, Film and Video, Architecture, Design, Designer Fashion, Music and Performing Arts, Visual Arts).

Absolute Skill Shortage Area

As of November 2010, an absolute skill shortage area is defined as an occupation which is listed on the Long Term Skill Shortage List, or was listed on the List at the time that the Expression of Interest was lodged.

Region Outside of Auckland

Employment is considered to be outside of Auckland if the principal place of work is not within the areas covered by the Auckland Council.

None of the above is intended or offered as personalized immigration advice.
